SPEEDING motorists in the Far North have been targeted as part of an initiative which was rolled out across the Highlands today.

Northern Constabulary officers focused on those ignoring speed limits as part of an ACPOS-led day of action across the North.

Head of road policing Inspector Derek Paterson said that the initiative was part of the force’s ongoing commitment to the improvement of safety on Highlands and Islands roads.

"Speeding is one of the main causal factors in road traffic collisions across the Highlands and Islands," he said.

"Those who exceed the speed limit or drive at inappropriate speeds for the prevailing circumstances not only risk their own lives but they risk the safety of other road users, and that includes pedestrians and cyclists who can be particularly vulnerable."

So far this year there have been two road fatalities in Caithness and a total of four in the Highlands and Islands.
