This old school picture, taken at Applegrove Primary School circa 1970, appeared in the ‘Gazette’ a couple of weeks ago. It sparked some interest from reader Mark Morgan, who is second from left in the back row, and doesn’t recall ever having seen the picture before. He was able to identify one of the two unknowns as John Milne, who left Forres some years later, as his father was in the RAF. Fiona Cameron was able to identify the missing girl as Patricia McCarthy. So the full line-up is: back, from left: Michael Davidson, Mark Morgan, Fiona Cameron and Wendy Dunbar. Third row: Louise Conti, Ishbel Nicol, Sandy Beaton, Brian Sutherland, MIchael Yallop, Phillip Shand, Lorraine Smith, Terry Winn and Patricia McCarthy. Second row: William Wilson, Robin James, Patrick Butler, John Milne, Alan MacIntosh, Frances Dufficy, Audrey McKenzie and Irene Johnstone. Front row: Ian Dawson, David Fraser, Ross Davidson, Colin Robertson, Neil Mackie, Gordon Dingwall, Teresa Dufficy, Shona McDonald and Michael Reid.

Sporting news – Forres Mechanics played Clachnacuddin in a Highland League match at Grant Street Park on Saturday. The homesters were favoured by the breeze in attacking the visitors’ goal, but Munro checked their progress. Forres played a fine game against the wind, so far holding their own. For the home team, R. Mackenzie scored off a pass from Macrae, but they seemed to slacken off, although seeming to have the best of it. In the second half Forres pressed, Sutherland having two attempts to get on level terms, but the opponents’ defence did not fail to keep Forres at bay. The Clach retaliated, visiting the Forres end, but it was not for long. Their forwards were taking the ball down well, and Sutherland gave Fulton a chance to score, which he did close in. On centring, the Clach rushed away and Matheson scored off a faulty clearance by the Forres custodian. The game ended 2 to 1 against Forres. The losers played a good game all through, and were unlucky in not getting a draw.

New postal service – It will be remembered that recently complaints were made of the inconvenient postal service given to the Glenferness district. We learn that arrangements have been made for a motor car service between Nairn and Glenferness, which begins on Monday. Forres letters for that district will, in consequence of this change, require to be posted by 9.20am.

Bang goes bingo – An application by Forres Mechanics Football Club for a let of the Lesser Town Hall for bingo sessions (a form of gambling) received short shrift at the monthly meeting of Forres Town Council on Monday evening.

The application was for Fridays from September 15 to November 17. The Town Hall Committee reported they had unanimously decided to recommend that the council refuse the application.

Dean of Guild W.R. Mackenzie, hall convener, said that as he was not present at the committee meeting, he would ask some of the members to make a motion.

Councillor G. Walker thereupon moved that the Council refuse, and Councillor C. Sutherland seconded.

The refusal was unanimously adopted.

TV appointments – Three staff announcers – two of them women, and all in their early 20s – have been appointed by Grampian Television.

They are Douglas Kynoch and June Imray of Aberdeen, and Inverness girl Elizabeth Mackenzie, who was born in Forres.

All three have been in the teaching profession. They will operate at the Aberdeen studios.

Mrs T visits – A crowd of around 70 people, many of them residents in the Thornhill estate, turned out on Friday to see Mrs Margaret Thatcher present a Forres couple with a certificate marking the one millionth council house sale in Great Britain.

The Prime Minister was greeted with cheers and applause as she stepped from her car outside the house of Mr and Mrs Alan Young, 3 Carrow Court.

Neighbours on each side of the two-storey house watched as Mrs Thatcher was introduced to the family of four, which included their two children, Jaime (9) and Mark (6).

"It is important we give tenants the right to buy their own houses," she said. "It is equally important that sale prices should be brought within the reach of these families, because if you don’t do that, the opportunity would not live."

She then presented the couple with a certificate celebrating the occasion, and also a bottle of "Prime Minister’s Reserve" whisky, specially blended and bottled at a nearby distillery.

It’s a snip at the Co-op – The Co-op’s new Forres High Street supermarket opened yesterday morning in nostalgic vein, with the ceremony being carried out by a local co-operator who has had strong ties with the organisation.

The ceremonial tape was cut at 10am by the current president of the Forres Co-op Women’s Guild, Mrs Janet Anderson.

A co-operator for more than 40 years, Mrs Anderson, who lives in Bogton Road, was by coincidence born on the very site of the new supermarket over 80 years ago.
