Cairngorms come to Culloden as folk fuses with classical

THE Cairngorms come to Culloden this weekend as pianist and composer Mhairi Hall and fiddler Patsy Reid perform their collaborative work, Contours of Cairngorm, in the theatre at Culloden Academy.
Originally performed at Celtic Connections in 2011, Contours of Cairngorm brings together traditional musicians Hall, Reid, guitarist Michael Bryan and percussionist Fraser Stone with classically trained performers. The music was specially orchestrated by Reid and Hall for the renowned Edinburgh Quartet with the intention of showcasing traditional Scottish music while at the same time combining classical approaches to performing and learning.
"From conception, I had always imagined the music of my trio — piano, guitar and percussion — with strings," Hall explained.
"I was really excited to get the opportunity from Celtic Connections for Patsy and I to work together again and create this piece."
This weekend, Reid, Hall, Fraser and Bryant will work with up to 20 musicians of all ages from Inverness and the surrounding area. These musicians will take on the parts originally played by the Edinburgh Quartet and have the opportunity to learn the art of ensemble playing at the forefront of the Scottish music scene.
The musicians are working in partnership with Fèis Rois to put on this weekend of workshops culminating with a performance in Culloden Academy at 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
"We are very excited to be able to provide this opportunity to being together community musicians and professional musicians," Fèis Rois chief executive Fiona Dalgetty said.
"We hope that instrumentalists from both classical and traditional music backgrounds will find the process challenging, rewarding and enjoyable."
