The Winter Tradition

The Winter Tradition – Ewan Simpson, Mark Morrow, Stephen Furbank and Callum Mouat – are an alternative indie rock band from Edinburgh, whose debut album Gradients came out in 2012. Theey are about to release new single Departures on Monday (Feb 12) at the end of a 10-date UK tour.

Below, Mark answers some questions from Margaret Chrystall.

from all your songs as the one you wanted to release as your single, timing/subject matter etc?Departures Why did you choose the song

We’ve been working a bunch of new songs over the past few months and Departures is the first to be released from this lot. I think it’s a good and catchy representation of what we are doing at the moment!

The Departures video is incredibly dramatic and dark - and possibly suitably cold feeling for a band called The Winter Tradition - we can even see your breath! Was any pneumonia contracted as a result of the filming?

Haha, yeah - maybe shooting a video, outside, at night, in winter, IN SCOTLAND isn’t the best of ideas!

We had to put up with a lot of on and off showers, freezing cold weather and lots of mud but we are really happy with how it turned out! We found this great spot in some Glasgow woods, loaded in a bunch of lights in the dark and started to create a huge light show along to our track. A big thank you to Stuart Breadner (video producer) and Tom Jones (lighting director) for their skills!

What plans for the rest of 2014 await you?

We have lots planned! We are touring Departures at the end of January and February. We then head back into the studio to do some more writing. I can’t give too much away at the moment, but it’s going to be a big and busy year!

What’s the most unforgettably good/ chilling/plain weird thing that has happened to the band in the last year?

Good question! The first thing that comes to mind is when the guys from Kasabian came down to watch us play in a bar in Leicester. It was insane and they were all really into it!

The Winter Tradition are at Mad Hatters, Inverness, on Sunday 9th February. For more from the band see this week's Highland News/North Star/Lochaber News.
