ROSS-SHIRE commuters who drive to work are being invited to halve their travelling costs — and put themselves in the frame to pocket a £250 prize.

The highland.liftshare.com website run by the group Transition Black Isle is challenging drivers to share a regular journey — such as the commute to work — with someone else, making the same trip to coincide with an awareness-raising week.

Liftshare Week 2013 runs from October 7 to 11 and the group behind the scheme is challenging motorists to consider their reaction to the prospect of buying fuel at just 69p a litre.

Marion MacDonald of Transition Black Isle said: "If you saw a petrol station advertising fuel for 69p a litre, you’d stop and buy some, wouldn’t you?

"Well if you’re currently driving alone on your commute to work, you can indeed halve your fuel costs.

"Just by sharing with one other person you will be leaving your car at home two weeks out of four.

"Equally, if you give someone a lift every day, their contribution to the journey costs will again halve the amount you are spending on petrol."

The highland.liftshare.com is a free-to-use website which enables people to find others going their way. It’s not necessary to own a car "as many members would be happy for a contribution to the fuel costs and a bit of friendly company"!

During the week, one lucky lift-sharer will win a full car valet worth £90 donated by Arnold Clark Inverness.

Anyone who adds a regular journey to highland.liftshare.com before October 13 will be entered into the draw.

All qualifying entrants will also be in with a chance to win £250 as part of a competition being organised by Liftshare HQ. Details can be found on highland.liftshare.com
