Children from Mount Pleasant Primary School in Thurso helped to plant hundreds of spring-flowering bulbs in part of the town.

The project was led by Alexander Glasgow, who has been involved in a number of initiatives to brighten up Thurso with flowers over the years.

He explained: "I have been planting daffodils at the foot of Mount Pleasant Road for two years now. This year, using funds remaining from a grant from the Dounreay Communities Fund, I purchased 500 more of mixed varieties.

"Then I remembered that in the 2000s, Marion Thurso had engaged the children at Mount Pleasant Primary in introducing this bright spring flower to the patch in front of the Castle Gatehouse. So I suggested to Elaine Wares, who runs the school's gardening club, that the children help plant more, and was delighted when she agreed.

"Right before Christmas they helped plant almost 400, and I finished the rest. They cannot wait to see their own work help make Thurso 2023 bloomin' marvellous. I also am looking at funding for a crocus walk through parts of Thurso."

Mrs Wares said: “The Mount Pleasant Gardening Group were delighted to be asked to support Alexander with this project. We are all very excited to see a lovely splash of colour when the bulbs appear.”

Mr Alexander said the patch is dedicated to the memory of the late Nessie Swanson who lived on Park Avenue for 64 years until she died aged 96 in August.
