Primary 7 pupils at Mount Pleasant enjoyed a star-studded event to mark their end-of-year celebration and awards night.

The Thurso children, who will be moving up to Thurso High after the summer, came dressed for an Oscars-style occasion – complete with film awards – in dresses, kilts, suits and ties.

They were joined by family members and school staff, all of whom were welcomed by members of Thurso and District Pipe Band, the Caithness Youth Pipe Band and P6 pupil Emme, who all gave up their time for the special occasion.

Many of the pipe band members were previous pupils of the school, some from when it opened in 1966.

Photos were taken as the pupils reached the end of the red carpet and then everyone found their seats for the awards.

First the primary 7 house captains presented a cheque for £100 – raised by running a school Christmas post – to Sheila Sinclair for the local branch of Macmillan.

Then followed the highlight of the evening, the viewing of the four films followed by the presentation of the "Oscars" to celebrate their success.

Buddy, Charlie, Max and Milo Bear had arrived from America in May, looking for a class to make them famous film stars. Primary 7 rose to the occasion and created four successful films – Spiderbear, Bear to the Future, Charlie Bear and The Egyptian Pyramid.

Each group of film-makers introduced their film, which was then shown to the audience. They eagerly awaited the opening of the golden envelopes and were delighted to receive their Oscar awards from deputy head/P7 teacher Christine Firth, who is due to retire in the summer.

The evening finished with a video of photos and video clips which celebrated their year in P7, followed by some snacks and juice and the opportunity to show their parents their scenery, props, costumes, scripts and wall displays.

Mrs Firth said: “This was an amazing way to celebrate the year’s learning in primary 7. Everyone worked really hard to write scripts, make scenery, props and costumes. They then filmed and edited their films successfully.

"It was great to see all their learning feeding into one topic, and to see the children so motivated. The results are excellent and they all deserved their awards.”
