A MOTORIST who lost control of his vehicle on the outskirts of Thurso due to icy conditions was unhurt.

Northern Constabulary said that a car left the road this morning (Monday) one mile south of the town on the A9 Thurso to Wick road at 7.30am.

The incident was reported to police but no action was taken as the lone motorist was unharmed and was able to get the car back on to the road.

All roads in the Caithness and North Sutherland area are currently open but it is advised that the A9 at Helmsdale has been heavily affected by snow and ice, and motorists are being told to take care.

Wick Airport was closed this morning as staff cleared snow off the runway. The airport has reopened but arrivals and departures from Aberdeen and Edinburgh are expected to be disrupted.

The Met Office said that the Far North will experience some snow showers throughout the day with temperatures only expected to reach one degree Celsius.

Snow showers are expected to continue tonight in the east of the county and the temperatures won’t rise above zero.

West Caithness is expected to escape the snow as mild air pushes in to raise temperatures to 3C.
