Mother used riding crop to discipline children

A MOTHER disciplined two of her children by using a riding crop which left severe bruising on their bodies.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Wick Sheriff Court today (Friday) when she admitted assaulting two of her children on December 14.

The incident came to the attention of police when they were notified by a member of teaching staff at the primary school the children attended.

The injuries were spotted when one of the children was tucking their shirt in and the marks on their body were visible.

As a result of the assaults, one child was left with a five centimetre bruise at the top of their body and an eight centimetre bruise at the bottom.

The other child was hit once with a riding crop which left a small bruise.

Senior fiscal depute David Barclay said the mother showed elements of having an old-fashioned point of view about how to discipline children and described her actions as inappropriate.

Sheriff Andrew Berry deferred sentence until Monday, March 23, for the preparation of criminal justice and social work reports.
