A RETIRED head teacher, originally from Thurso, celebrated his 70th birthday last Monday by climbing the 706 metres up Morven.

Andrew Manson, who now lives in Musselburgh, was born and brought up in Caithness and his sister, Beth, still lives in Thurso with her husband, local photographer John Macrae.

He tackled the Caithness peak along with his wife, Donna, sons, Andrew John and Alan, and daughter, Fiona, as well as dogs Stella, Pip and Ginny.

Andrew has had some experience in climbing hills before but this was his first time tackling the highest peak in his home county. He said that it was a steep climb and quite rough underfoot but it was not the most difficult hill he had done.

He described the view from the top as “fantastic” and celebrated reaching the summit with a dram.

After a six-mile walk in from Braemore the hill took three-and-a-half hours to complete.

And the only complaint? The amount of midges around the base of the hill!
