More than 40 volunteers rallied round to give Wick its annual summer spruce-up, ensuring the town would be looking its best for the County Show and gala week.

This was the fourth year that the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council had organised the session, with support from Wick Paths Group and Wick Flowers.

It went ahead in sunny weather on Wednesday, July 16.

Organiser Allan Bruce, the community council chairman, explained: “This event is held to give our town centre a wee spruce-up prior to the thousands of visitors that come to Wick for the County Show and gala week.

“It was a beautiful evening with 42 volunteers ranging from 10 years to their eighties helping out.

“The main tasks carried out included weeding and sweeping the lanes leading on to Bridge and High Street, around Caithness House and the mart car park. A litter-pick was carried out along the gala procession route, and the various town centre benches were given a good wash-down.

“It was amazing the area we were able to cover.

“On behalf of the community council I would like to thank the members of Wick Paths Group and Wick Flowers as well as members of the public that came along to help out.

“Thanks also to the Highland Council amenities and waste services teams – they ensured the grass was all cut and strimmed and that the streets and pavements in the town centre were swept using the small pavement sweeper.”

Mr Bruce also acknowledged the Bord de l’eau restaurant for supplying much-needed soft drinks for the volunteers.
