There was a good turnout at Castlehill Heritage Centre for the latest public event held by Caithness Astronomy Group (CAG) with great observing on clear skies.
Four telescopes were trained on the moon to see the landing site of Apollo 11, craters and other features. Many took the opportunity to take photographs on smartphones with a special adapter being available for use.
Also on display was a special astrophotography camera that links up a telescope to a laptop to allow group viewing.
After the observing session, there were two talks – one on the Apollo missions by Carole Whittaker and another by Mark Gibson on some of the interesting “evidence” used to try and prove that the moon landings were a hoax.
The next public event is on Tuesday, May 14, "In search of a giant impact crater in Scotland" – a talk about the Lairg Asteroid Impact Event by Dr Mike Simms, National Museums Northern Ireland, at the Pentland Hotel in Thurso (doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start).
