A THURSO bank is to host a free in-branch event to help people understand a range of money matters from budgeting to borrowing.

Taking place on Tuesday, March 24, the Money Talks event is open to all and will take place in the Santander branch in the town's Olrig Street from 10am.

It is part of a national push by Santander to encourage people to talk about their money.

In 2019, more than 20 million adults in the UK admitted they didn’t feel comfortable talking about their finances, while the average household debt stood at almost £60,000.

The Thurso event will cover key topics including understanding essential and non-essential payments and planning a budget around them, as well as ways in which customers can easily track the money leaving their account – for example through text alerts.

Advice will also be given on the main types of borrowing and the differences between them, and ways in which customers get help if struggling to manage their money.

Community branch manager Julie Paterson said: “Talking about money is not easy or comfortable for many people, but it is often the first step to getting control of your cash. We want to use our branch in Thurso to support the local community and this is one of the ways we can really help people in their day-to-day lives.

“Whether you’re looking for tips on creating a monthly budget, need to borrow some money but can’t decide between a credit card or personal loan, or you’re concerned about keeping up with the debt you’ve got, our Money Talks event can help you take a positive step in the right direction.”

The content of the event is designed to be informative and interactive, giving guests practical tips and guidance to look after their money. Those attending will be under no pressure to share details of their own personal finances if they don’t want to.

There will be the chance to speak privately to a member of the team afterwards if anyone would like more information on any of the points discussed.

Alongside its Money Talks events, Santander has enlisted the help of TV personality Gaby Roslin to create five new videos on its website providing step-by-step ways customers can take charge of their money.
