Snow and ice alert flagged for Highlands by Met Office with warnings running until Wednesday morning

THE Met Office has issue a series of weather warnings for ice and snow over the next few days in the Highlands.

The first Yellow warning for ice kicks in at 10pm tonight and runs until 10am on Sunday morning.

It states: "Icy surfaces and high ground snow leading to some difficult travelling conditions in places on Saturday night and Sunday morning."

And it warns: "Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.Probably some ice on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

And then a Yellow warning of snow and ice begins at 5pm on Sunday evening and runs through until 10am on Wednesday, January 18.

It states: "Snow showers and icy stretches may bring some disruption.

"Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services."

It also warns of an increased likelihood of slips and falls on icy surfaces and of icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Depending on location within the Highlands, the temperature over the next four days is expected to range from a high of 4C down to -5C. In notorious cold spot Altnaharra in Sutherland, heavy snow showers are forecast on Sunday and Monday with the temperature dipping to -5C on Sunday evening. It's expected to drop to -3C in Inverness and Dingwall first thing on Monday morning and stay below freezing most of the day.
