CHILDREN in Melvich Primary School have opted for an eco-friendly Christmas.

At a recent meeting of the school's eco committee members discussed how the pupils and staff could celebrate the festive season in an environmentally friendly ways.

The first action was to launch a competition for pupils to create a Christmas tree decoration using only recycled materials. The winner was Zara MacKintosh (P5) with a snowflake decoration made solely from lolly sticks.

The committee then calculated that if all the pupils and staff within their small school were to exchange Christmas cards with one another, the total would amount to 1600.

It was decided that a more eco-friendly way of exchanging Christmas greetings would be for each member of the school community to send just one card to the whole school with the eco committee displaying these on a Giving Tree. Alongside that there is the opportunity to donate to a charity chosen by the committee, the SSCPA.

Local SSPCA inspector Christine Lord visited the school to launch the Giving Tree and to judge the Christmas decoration competition. She will return in the new year to carry out some workshops with the pupils and to receive the donations given over the festive period.
