THE sad passing of a Wick man was the cause of a long-forgotten sight in Wick.

Donald (Denny) Taylor, of the town’s Murchison Street, died last Thursday and for his funeral on Wednesday Clair Harper, of John Sinclair funeral directors in Macarthur Street, arranged for a special horse-drawn hearse to travel nearly 300 miles for the final goodbye.

Andrew May, of Biggar Shiels Carriage Driving, was the man leading the procession from the rest rooms to Wick cemetery.

He has been operating a carriage service for funerals, weddings and many other events for around six years.

The horses were Friesian stallions – traditionally the breed used for funeral services.

One local man said the last time he had seen a hearse carriage had been in the 1930s.
