Road traffic officers in the Highlands and Islands dealt with nine people in connection with drink driving and drug driving offences at the weekend.

Police Scotland said the crackdown was part of ongoing efforts to keep the country's roads safe.

The alleged offences included an incident in Caithness, when on Sunday, a 19-year-old man was reported to the Procurator Fiscal for drink-driving offences following a single vehicle collision on the A9 by Georgemas Junction, Halkirk around 5.45am.

Elsewhere, a 29-year-old man was stopped by police on the B9169, Easter Kinkell on Friday at around 9.15pm, and failed a roadside drug test.

On Saturday, at around 1.30pm, a 21-year-old man failed a roadside drug test. Later than evening, around 10.10pm, on the A832 Tarradale, a 21-year-old man failed a roadside drug test, and on the same date, a 22-year-old man was stopped by police on the A864 Bunchrew and also failed a roadside drug test.

Around 10pm on Saturday, another man was stopped in his vehicle within Corpach, Fort William, while making deliveries. The 51-year-old was subsequently charged in connection with drink-drive offences and has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

That same morning, around 3am, a 49-year-old man was approached by officers in Drummond, Inverness. He too has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with drink-drive offences.

On Sunday at around 2.10pm, a 52-year-old man failed a drug wipe test in Avoch. And later that evening, officers stopped a 24-year-old male driver on the A835 Moanadh-Mor. He also failed a drug wipe test.

Sergeant Neil Macdonald said: “Our pro-active patrols are part of our ongoing efforts to keep detecting those offenders who put all road users at risk.

"Road safety remains a priority for us and we want to reassure everyone we will respond to any concerns people may have while continuing to improve road safety in the Highland and Islands."
