The jail sentence was imposed at Wick Sheriff Court.

A JAIL sentence was imposed on a north man who assaulted another male after a drinking session.

Steven Murray of Main Street, Golspie, punched David Souter to the body, scratched his left forearm and struck him on the face. The incident took place at Mount Pleasant Road in Thurso on October 19 last year.

He admitted the assault at an earlier court appearance but sentence was deferred for a background report.

On Friday, solicitor, Neil Wilson, said his client is in “a very difficult position” due to his recent appearances at Dornoch and Kirkwall sheriff courts.

But the agent said Murray’s behaviour was a result of his “over-indulgence in alcohol” although he took full responsibility for his actions.

Mr Wilson said his client does not have an alcohol problem but “on occasions he drinks too much” and gets into difficulties.

“If he drinks to excess he must face the consequences,” said the solicitor.

Given Murray’s previous convictions, Sheriff Berry decided the only appropriate disposal was a custodial sentence.

He jailed him for 135 days.
