An Ayrshire man has been accused of having an offensive weapon – a walking stick – in his possession and using it in an assault.

William Wallace denies the charges and will stand trial later in the year.

The 71-year-old of Brewland Street, Galston, is alleged to have repeatedly struck James Besant on the A855, at Brough, Dunnet, on June 12.

Wallace claimed at Wick Sheriff Court on Wednesday that he acted in self-defence.

He will fight his case at his trial on November 14.
