A MAN has appeared in custody today (Monday) to face five charges arising from his alleged misuse of a forklift in a Caithness quarry at the weekend.

Ryan Beresford pleaded not guilty at Wick Sheriff Court to taking away the forklift and driving it without the required licence or insurance at Achscrabster Quarry, west of Thurso on Saturday.

The 22-year-old also denied wilfully and recklessly cutting a chain, damaging various vehicles while manoeuvring the forklift, crashing into a wall and lamp post and damaging a large quantity of flagstone as well as failing to provide specimens of breath at Thurso police station.

Beresford, of Achscrabster Farm Cottages, Thurso, further pleaded not guilty to entering the quarry without authorisation.

Beresford was released on bail pending his trial on January 5.
