FIRE crews have tackled a fierce blaze in a first floor flat in Wick last night.

Police and fire crews rushed to Girnigoe Street at 6.51pm last night as the fire took hold in the upstairs property.

Two fire engines attended and battled the flames and smoke for around half an hour as the emergency blue lights lit up the street and smoke could be seen across the night sky.

Highland and Islands Fire and Rescue told www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk that there was 10 meters square of fire damage in the kitchen and 100 per cent smoke damage to the remainder of the flat.

Crews used four breathing apparatus a hose reel jet and small gear to get the situation under control.

It was understood elderly neighbours were taken from their houses as a precaution and one male was taken to hospital prior to the fire department’s arrival on the scene. The Groat understands an arrest was made by police and a report submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A man is expected to appear in private at Wick Sheriff Court this afternoon.
