Man appears in court charged over A9 crash that injured three

A man has appeared in court for motoring offences after three people were injured on the A9 in the Highlands.

The incident happened at Tomich in Easter Ross on New Year's Day.

Three people were taken to hospital following the collision which happened at around 5.15pm.

It involved a white VW Scirocco, a white Vauxhall Astra and a white Ford Transit van.

Bilal Amla (29) appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court on January 2, 2023.

Amla, from Leicester, was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, drink driving and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He made no plea and was committed for further examination and released on bail meantime.

His next court appearance is yet to be confirmed.

The driver of the van, a 24-year-old man, and two women from the Astra, both aged 26, were taken by ambulance to Raigmore Hospital.

The 24-year-old man's condition is described by medical staff as being serious but stable. One woman remains in hospital in a stable condition. The second lady was discharged.

The driver and passenger of the VW Scirocco, both men aged 29 and 25 years, were not injured.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Sergeant Alasdair MacKay, of the roads policing unit, said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the crash to contact police. Information can be passed to officers via 101.

"Please quote reference number 3333 of Sunday, January 1, 2023."
