A rowdy arrested after causing a dust-up in a pub went on to kick out at a police constable.

Paul McCann, of 6 Huddart Street, Wick, had been due to go to trial at Wick Sheriff Court on Monday, to contest a total of six charges.

However he instead changed his plea to one of guilty to assaulting a member of bar staff by pushing him on the body at the town’s Wetherspoons pub on February 3 this year.

The 54-year-old also admitted wilfully or recklessly breaking a glass door panel in the bar and assaulting a constable in the cell block of Wick police station by trying to kick him on the body.

His not guilty pleas to two further charges, of threatening and abusive behaviour and urinating and defecating on the floor of the police cell, were accepted by the court.

His solicitor William Young said McCann had not been fit to attend court on Monday as he had been displaying Covid symptoms over the weekend.

Fiscal David Barclay said McCann committed the offences against a background of a considerable alcohol problem.

Sheriff Ian Miller deferred sentence until August 17in order to obtain criminal justice social work and restriction of liberty reports.
