Making historic hives at Castletown

Olrig and District Beekeepers Association recently held a skep making workshop in Castletown.

Skeps are the types of hives that bees were kept in before the advent of wooden moveable frame hives.

Nowadays skeps are mainly used for swarm collection and ornamental purposes. The workshop was financially supported by the Caithness Community Fund.
