Primary pupils at Miller Academy Primary School in Thurso have come together to create an inspiring piece of artwork that celebrates happiness, kindness – and the power of “dreaming big”.

The mural is the result of months of hard work by the school’s Art and Wellbeing Nurture Group, a team made up of pupils from Primary 1 to 7, led by pupil support assistant Mrs Critchley.

Formed to promote creative expression, mindfulness and teamwork, the group quickly grew in size as more children asked to be involved.

Since January, the young artists have collaborated to design and complete a colourful mural that reflects what makes them happy and how much can be achieved by working together.

Their finished work represents importance of caring for our own wellbeing – and spreading kindness to others, as acting head teacher, Mrs Ross, attests.

“As a school we work very hard to ensure all learners make progress in curricular areas such as literacy and numeracy,” she explains. “However, we feel that it is also important we teach children how to express their thoughts and feelings.

“We believe that art can be a wonderful way of doing this. We want the children to learn to nurture and care for their only mental health and we believe that being involved art projects like this is an excellent way if doing this.

“We started with a small group, however, this quickly grew with more and more children wanting to get involved.

“Mrs Critchley worked incredibly hard to ensure all the pupils were involved in the project and we are looking forward to further developing this next year.

“I couldn’t be prouder of all the children and staff involved and we hope everyone can enjoy Miller’s Magical Mural”.
