Gary Mackay-Steven is set to become the first Caithnessian in living memory to play in the Scottish Cup Final as he scored in Dundee United's 3-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

The Thurso born winger scored the Tangerines second to ensure a date at the cup final at Celtic Park in May.

Stuart Armstrong gave Dundee United the lead after 23 minutes before Mackay-Steven doubled the SPL side's advantage 13 minutes later.

Rangers pulled one back just before half time from a free kick from Steven Smith.

Despite a poor performance in the second half, United sealed their place in the final when Nadir Ciftci captialised on a howler from Gers goalkeeper Steve Simonsen to put the game beyond doubt.

Mackay-Steven is likely to start for Dundee United at the cup final on Saturday, May 17 against either Aberdeen or St Johnstone.

He started his football career as a youngster playing for Thurso Swifts before playing for youth teams at Ross County, Liverpool and Fulham.

In 2011 he signed for Airdrie United before moving to Tannadice 12 months later.
