Lybster pupils commemorate VE Day
Pupils from Lybster Primary School were able to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day despite the coronavirus lockdown.
Youngsters studied World War II online and then made pictures, bunting and medals to display in their windows. Piper Andrew Sinclair (P6) played a selection of tunes at the Latheron war memorial.
Sister and brother Alaycia and Jacob Linton, Lybster school pupils and members of the Friday club at Lybster Central Church, used their creative skills in different ways. Jacob designed a medal for "our NHS heroes", while Alaycia drew pictures of a modern nurse and one from World War II, explaining: “They both do the same job – they are both heroes.”
Pupil support assistants helped to create the display with limited resources, showing that the spirit of "make do and mend" lives on today.
Included in the display were photos of two local war veterans – Richard Polanski, who served in both the Polish and British forces, and was part of an attack on the German battleship Bismarck; and Robert Larnach, who served in the Royal Artillery and went ashore from a barge at Normandy's Sword beach.

Mr Larnach was involved in a Zoom call with Dutch youngsters recalling his wartime experiences.
It is hoped that a commemoration for VE75 will be possible when restrictions are lifted.
