A CAITHNESS woman has raised almost £4300 for a cancer charity after a gruelling trip which involved her cycling and running over 755 miles.

Lorna Stanger (51) completed a duathlon which involved running from Thurso, where she lives, to Inverness and then cycling the North Coast 500 route in just over five days.

She intended to run back home from Inverness but a knee injury forced a change of plan and she decided to cycle that segment of the route while raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

She then decided to run from the Highland capital to Thurso last Saturday once her knee felt better.

She completed the run in 21 hours and 33 minutes, wearing her Macmillan Cancer Support T-shirt. Her efforts raised £4261 for the charity.

"It went very well and my knee was fine," Lorna said. "I am absolutely delighted with the response from the public and the amount that has been raised."

Lorna wanted to raise money for the charity as she has lost friends to cancer and knows others who are receiving treatment.

Looking back on the whole journey, which involved a back-up team, Lorna said: "It went really, really well. We had the best of the weather and the scenery was spectacular – it was quite an adventure."

Although admitting to being very tired, she was delighted with how well she managed all the hills without stopping.

"I was surprised how quickly I got up the road," Lorna said.

While taking part in the ultra duathlon she kept herself going by thinking about a close friend who had just found out she had breast cancer.

Macmillan Cancer Support says it is delighted with Lorna's efforts and the money she has raised.
