The Lord-Lieutenant of Caithness has said everyone in the county will be wishing King Charles a "full and speedy recovery" following his cancer diagnosis.

It was announced on Monday that His Majesty had been diagnosed with a form of cancer which came to light during a prostate procedure.

He has been a regular summer visitor to Caithness over the years.

Lord Thurso, the Lord-Lieutenant, said: "Like everyone, I was very sorry to hear of the diagnosis.

"I would reflect what the Prime Minister said, that it has been caught early and therefore the prognosis hopefully is good.

"I'm sure I speak for everybody in Caithness in wishing him a full and speedy recovery."

Jamie Stone, the MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “I think I speak for just about everyone in the Highlands in saying that we wish him the very best treatment and a speedy recovery, not least because he has been a particularly good friend to the far north for many years and has taken great trouble with more local people than I could name. That sort of relationship is personal and very special.

“Cancer is indeed a scary and isolating word. This is why the Royal Family’s decision to inform the public about the King’s diagnosis is so brave and progressive, and one which will help cancer patients all across the UK feel less alone. We all hope that, once he is recovered, he will come back to his beloved Castle of Mey and see us all again.”

The statement issued by Buckingham Palace on Monday said: "During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
