Lilian Wark is retiring next week after some 30 years as head teacher at first Pulteneytown Academy and then Newton Park Primary School in Wick.

Parent council chairman Eric Baijal said Miss Wark had given sterling service to the county and would be missed.

Her long-standing current deputy, Laura Harper, has been appointed as head teacher at Newton Park.

Mr Baijal said: "The community owes Lilian Wark a great debt. She has positively impacted the lives of literally thousands of children in Wick over several generations.

"She will be missed and we wish her a long, healthy and happy retirement.

"We are also delighted to welcome Laura as head teacher and wish her an equally successful tenure."
