MUSIC lovers from the Far North were among the thousands of revellers at RockNess at the weekend.

Caithness campers and day-trippers travelled to Dores on Friday for the start of the event which featured performances from headliners Mumford & Sons, Deadmau5 and Biffy Clyro.

With only a handful of downpours during the three-day music extravaganza, spirits remained high and dry.

However, news of the death of a 19-year-old media student from Portobello, Edinburgh, clouded the weekend.

Alex Herriot died in Raigmore Hospital in the early hours of Sunday after collapsing at the festival. A police investigation is under way into the teenager’s death which has been linked to drugs.

Police reported that the 30,000-strong crowd was generally well-behaved, despite the death of the young man and 235 positive drugs searches. Northern Constabulary’s event commander, Superintendent Stevie Mackay, said: "From a policing perspective the event passed relatively safely, with low levels of crime and disorder.

"The general behaviour of festival-goers has been very good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and act responsibly."

A highlight on Saturday was the appearance of the Olympic torch on the main stage, ensuring that the Caithness contingent did not miss out on the spectacle at John O’Groats on Sunday.

Glasgow three-piece Biffy Clyro brought the festival to an end on Sunday with an epic sing-along and encore before the traditional fireworks display lit up the backdrop of Loch Ness.
