Thirty-six selfless volunteers worked together to clean around Wick as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful Spring Clean 2024 initiative on Sunday.

Three litter-picks have been organised by Allan Bruce on behalf of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council (RBWCC) and volunteers from Wick Paths Group (WPG) and Wick Flowers Group were involved.

John Bogle, WPG secretary, expressed his delight at the turnout and the amount of litter collected.

He said "Wick Paths Group were delighted to once again join with the RBWCC and Wick Flowers Group to carry out the first of three major litter picks in the town and we would like to thank all those who came along to help. I was absolutely delighted to see 36 volunteers turn out to help fill a big trailer with rubbish collected between Shore Road and the Trinkie.

"Of course it would be even better if the litter didn't get discarded in the first place, people should take their litter home. Also, as usual, we noted a lot of domestic type waste which probably blew out of the blue recycling bins. This can easily be resolved by purchasing a £5 bin hook from Meiklejohn's in Thurso St or the filling station in Francis St, with all profits going to the Seafarers Memorial Group.

"There were several new faces who joined in on this occasion, which was great to see. If anyone wants to be kept updated about our activities they can be added to our mailing list by contacting us on our Facebook page. We would also like to thank the various individuals who pick up litter on a daily basis on their walks through the town – together we are making a difference."

WPG is a group set up to develop the path network so that visitors and locals alike can enjoy the scenery, natural heritage and history of Wick.

The second litter-pick is scheduled for Wick Airport Industrial Estate and the nearby forest area on Sunday, March 31. The meeting place is behind Sutherland Brothers' premises. The final event on Sunday, April 21, will cover general areas of the town and the meeting place is the car park opposite the Norseman Hotel. All three events have 10am start time.
