Lights Out event to mark centenary of First World War

PEOPLE in Caithness are being asked to take part in a centenary commemoration of World War One by switching off all the lights in their houses for an hour.

Lights Out is inviting everyone to turn off the lights in their homes from 10pm to 11pm tonight (Monday) and instead leave on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection.

It is hoped the project will be one of the largest mass participation events of its kind seen in the UK and will complement a candlelit service held at Westminster Abbey.

The project was inspired by the words of wartime foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey who said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”

Lights Out aims to remember the servicemen and women who gave their lives during the First World War and wants to see one million candles lit at war memorials, community centres and homes in every village, town and city throughout the country.
