Body found off North Sutherland coast

POLICE have confirmed that a body has been recovered from the sea off the coast of North Sutherland.

The man was found in water near to Neave Island off the coast of Tongue on Tuesday afternoon.

The identity of the body has not yet been named.

However, Cumbria Police have informed the family of Christopher Strange (59) from Kendal, who went missing from his home on Monday and was believed to have travelled to the Highlands.

A spokesman said: "Police are working to formally identify the body of the man which was found in the water near to Neave Island, off the coast of Tongue in the Sutherland area on Tuesday June 24.

"Until formal identification can take place, no identification will be released.

"However the family of missing person, Christopher Strange, are being supported by police officers at this time. "

Thurso Lifeboat was part of the search operation when crew launched The Taylors from Scrabster Harbour at 11:50am.

A rescue helicopter from Shetland Coastguard refuelled at Wick John O' Groats Airport before heading to the area.
