Wick High School (WHS) celebrated LGBT History Month with pupils taking part in lessons exploring the identities that make up the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pupils were encouraged to take part in research projects exploring key figures from LGBT history including Alan Turing, Sally Ride, and Bayard Rustin.

The end of the month saw the school's first Purple Friday celebration. The bake sale raised £261.72 for LGBT Youth Scotland which will use the funds to support numerous services for LGBT young people across the country.

A WHS newsletter posted today said: "We would like to thank all the staff and pupils who contributed baking and to everyone who bought some delicious baked goods. A big thank you to the S6 pupils who ran the stall, too."

February was also an important month for the school's LGBT Charter journey. Staff participated in online learning modules based on creating a more inclusive practice across the school. This was followed by 24 members of staff taking part in a live training session run by LGBT Youth Scotland.

The newsletter continued: "It was a great opportunity for staff to come together and discuss how we can continue to push Wick High School to be as inclusive as possible. Finally, we would like to thank S6 pupil Scott Sinclair who won our recent logo competition. Our LGBTQIA+ Equalities Group had been looking for a logo that incorporated both their WHS and LGBTQIA+ identities. We think Scott’s design does this perfectly."
