The roof on the Riverside boating shed in Wick is to be replaced after planning consent was granted by Highland Council.

The Wick Gala Committee, which uses the facility at St Fergus Road, wanted permission to replace the roof as it leaks.

A report compiled by a council planning official said: "The site lies on the north bank of the Wick river approximately 250 north-west of the bridge on Bridge Street. The shed – built in the 1950s – was originally used for storage of rowing boats on the river but is now used to store equipment for use at various events run by the Wick gala committee.

’The roof is in a poor state of repair and leaks, the committee wish to replace with green box profile sheeting. It is considered that the materials to be used are acceptable and that permission be granted."

It added: "The proposal is considered to comply with the Local Development Plan and non statutory guidance. The proposal will not adversely affect the appearance of the existing building or the character of the surrounding area; nor will it have a detrimental impact upon neighbouring amenity. There are no third party concerns... and there are no material considerations which would warrant refusal of the application."

The application was approved subject to the new roof covering being in a dark colour with the existing roof pitch being retained. The condition was imposed on visual amenity grounds.
