THE first new white fishing boat to enter service in Caithness in years has been launched at a Poland shipyard and now is being towed to Denmark to be fitted out.

The new Boy Andrew, costing £2.6 million, is set to be delivered by December after which the current Boy Andrew will be sold off.

Wick-based Bremner Fishing Company is the owner and operator of the last two boats still involved in the county’s white fishing fleet, the Boy Andrew and the Opportune. The new boat will be able to carry around 1100 boxes, 31,000 litres of fuel and 26,000 litres of fresh water for domestic and ice-making requirements.

Owner Andrew Bremner said: “It’s an act of faith in the future of the fishing industry.

“Everything’s up in the air right now and nobody knows what’s happening but we have a local crew and quite a lot of them are young crew members. We intend to continue fishing in Caithness.”
