Latest Tesco plans for Thurso go on display

Tesco will hold its exhibition at Millbank Road on Monday between 3pm to 6pm.

TESCO is to hold a public exhibition of its proposed new supermarket in Thurso to coincide with its application for a three year extension of its planning permission to develop the town’s former auction mart site.

The exhibition will be held on Monday at its current store at Millbank.

The development has been surrounded in controversy ever since Tesco first obtained permission to build a new supermarket by Highland Council in August 2009. The consent is due to run out on January 17.

The controversial development comprised a new supermarket with a four-pump petrol station, a car park and new access.

Tesco had planned to open its new supermarket by spring 2011, with the expectation that 60 jobs would be created in addition to its current workforce of 90.

The delay has caused anger in the local community with all three Thurso councillors Donnie Mackay, John Rosie and Roger Saxon calling for Tesco to make its intentions clear to the public or sell the land.

The exhibition will take place between 3pm and 6pm when members of the public will be invited to offer comments regarding the development.
