Latest mart prices from Quoybrae and Thainstone

QUOYBRAE: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (July 13) sold 578 store cattle and 15 head of breeding cattle.

Bullocks (310) averaged 228.5p and sold to 305.6p per kg for a 360kg Limousin cross from Roadside, Gills and £1380 gross for a 668kg Simmental cross from 11 Lochend, Barrock.

Heifers (268) averaged 222.7p and sold to 262.6p per kg for four 438kg Simmental crosses from Granton Mains, Bower, and £1300 gross twice for a 655kg Simmental from Norland, Lybster, and a 584kg Simmental cross from 11 Lochend, Barrock.

A full ringside of buyers ensured that all classes of cattle made a flying trade.

New season prime lambs (100) averaged 201.1p to 213.5p per kg for five 44.5kg Texels from Cairnside, 36 Oldhall and £96 gross twice for two 51kg Suffolks from Quoybrae Farmhouse and five 52.2kg Texels from Balnahard, Harpsdale.

Store lambs (221) averaged £74.81 to £81 for Suffolks from Achvarasdal.

Feeding ewes and rams (80) to £106 for a Charollais ram from Murza, Bower.

THAINSTONE: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (July 9)

A total of 85 cast cows and prime cattle and sheep were forward from Caithness, Ross-shire and Sutherland consignors with leading prices as follows:

Cast cows and prime cattle

Thainstone sold 123 cast cows and bulls where Continental cows were keenly bid for once again, selling to a top to £1530 for a Charolais from Auchincrieve, Rothiemay, and 196.5p per kg for a Limousin from Clunycrichton, Banchory. Beef cows averaged 148.8p while dairy cows averaged 116.9p. An increased number of sixteen cast bulls saw a top of £1,790 from Wallfield, Lochhill, and averaging 123.9p an increase on the week.

Beef cows (19) sold to 179.6p per kg for a 640kg British Blue cross from J K Manson, Upper Northfield, Wick, and £1290 gross for a 792kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Messrs G Macadie.

Prime cattle – over 30 months (3) sold to 189p per kg and £1266.30 gross for a 670kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs G Macadie, Roadside.

Achscrabster, Bridge of Westfield (Simx) £1165.60, 188ppk; Rockhill, Wick (Lim) £1044.30, 177ppk.

Sheep (60)

Thainstone once again saw well-bred lambs with good finish sold to strong rates, with heavy lambs being exceptionally well bid for and short of buyers’ requirements. An increased show of ewes including pure types met a fast-selling trade. Top price was £157 for a pen of three pure Texels from Peter Duthie, Mains of Craighall.

Prime sheep

Old season lambs sold to 143.4p per kg and £97.50 for Cheviots from Messr T Sinclair, Reaster Lyth.

Feeding ewes and rams

Feeding ewes sold to £133.00 for Texels from Messrs W Bain, Kennachy, Thurso.

Leading prices:

Blu Tex – Kennachy £127.00; Suf – Glastullich, Nigg Station £95.00; Chv – Reaster, Lyth £91.50; ChvX – Lower Thura £87.50; Texx – Lower Thura, Bower £82.50; Sht – Lower Thura £50.50.

Feeding rams sold to £125 for Texels from J S Polson, Lower Thura, Bower.

Leading prices

TexX – Glastullich £117; Tex – Kennachy £107.50.
