THAINSTONE: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (June 26) sold 21 store cattle from Caithness, Ross-shire and Sutherland.

Store cattle (10)

Bullocks to a top of 227p per kilo and £1,110 gross per head for a 490kg Aberdeen Angus cross from L MacKintosh, Rallan, Brora.

Heifers to a top of 221.6p per kilo and £820 gross for a 370kg Limousin cross from J Billet, Kintradwell, Brora.

Leading prices per head

Bullocks: 301-350kg – Kintradwell (BSHX) £700, 212.1p.

351-400kg – Kinlochy (BSHX) £855, 213.6p.

Heifers: 351-400kg – Kintradwell (BSHX) £770, 205.9p.

Young bulls (7) sold to a top of 209.2p per kilo for a 502kg Limousin bull and £1070 for a 568kg Limousin from T Sinclair, Reaster, Lyth.

Leading prices

451kg-500kg – Reaster (LimX) £940, 204.3p.

Young calves (4) sold to £490 for a Devon cross male from M R & G S Jenkins, Ha, Bowermadden.

Thainstone: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (June 25)

A total of 112 cast cows and prime cattle and sheep were forward from Caithness, Ross-shire and Sutherland consignors with leading prices as follows:

Cast cows and prime cattle

Trade for all classes easily maintained the recent high trade experienced at Thainstone. Averages for all classes of stock showed a useful increase with the trade for cows topping at £1670 for a Charolais cow consigned by J H & S Anderson, Cloy, Fortrose, and to 202.3p per kg for a Simmental cross cow from Messrs Jack, Woodend, Muir of Ord. Beef cows averaged 149.9p (+2.9p), while dairy cows levelled at 119.4p (+3p).

Cast bulls also met a fast-selling trade, topping at £1710 for a Charolais from A Sleigh & Son, Boghouse, Tarves. Top price per kg in the bull section was 150.5p paid to S Laird & Co, The Pole, Burray, for a Limousin. Bulls averaged 123.7p (+5.8p).

The entire sale levelled at a remarkable £1040.71 per head. With nine active buyers providing serious competition round the ringside many, more cows and bulls are required on a weekly basis.

Beef cows (43) sold to 186.2p per kg for a 478kg British Shorthorn cross from M J & R J Owen, Kinlochy, Tannach, and £1670 gross for a 1060 kg Charolais from J H & S Anderson, Cloy, Fortrose.
