A man who displayed a 'flagrant disregard' for the law by driving while disqualified has been spared a jail sentence.
Sheriff Neil Wilson said he would have been justified in imposing a custodial term on Kris Ronaldson but had decided to give him a chance.
Ronaldson (30) was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid community work and will be under supervision for two years.
He was also banned from driving for three years.
The accused, of Robertson Crescent, Keiss, previously admitted having taken and driven away a car without the consent of the owner, and driven while disqualified and without insurance.
The offences occurred in Wellington Avenue, Wick, and elsewhere in Caithness, on November 10 last year.
John Macleod told Wick Sheriff Court that Ronaldson accepted full responsibility for his actions and had not sought to blame anyone else.
The solicitor appreciated that the sheriff would take account of "the blatant nature" of the offences but asked him to consider a recommendation in a background report, for unpaid work.
Sheriff Wilson said that disqualification was a court order that Ronaldson had ignored and had no-one else to blame but himself.
The sheriff added that given the accused's offending record for road traffic offences the ban had to be a lengthy one.
Ronaldson was admonished on the insurance charge.
