Katie-Rose wins top cadet award

PASSING with flying colours, a Caithness teenager ended up top student at a junior cadet instructors course held this summer.

Katie-Rose MacDonald (16), of the Castletown detachment of the Army Cadet Force, received the prestigious award at the 1st Battalion Highlanders ACF annual summer camp on Benbecula.

She was one of 339 cadets from across the Highlands and Islands who took part in the two-week course. She was taught and tested on skills necessary to instruct other cadets and demonstrate their teaching capabilities that included map and compass, drill, fieldcraft and weapon handling.

After excelling in each of these subject, she received an outstanding course report and was presented with the trophy for being the top student in her course.

Detachment commander Captain Stephen Mezals said what Katie-Rose shown that she had the skills needed to be a natural leader."

"This is a remarkable achievement for any cadet and it is a prestigious award within the 1st Battalion Highlanders ACF," he said.

"Katie-Rose is an asset to Castletown detachment and I am in no doubt that she will go far in the Army Cadet Force and in her future endeavours."

The Army Cadet Force is a nationwide voluntary youth organisation for anyone aged 12 to 18 years old. It aims at inspiring young people to achieve through exciting yet challenging activities. For more information about joining either as a cadet or an adult volunteer, contact 01847 893 868.
