LOCAL and international artists have expressed an interest in creating permanent artwork on coastal paths at John O’Groats as part of the £6 million project to redevelop the area.

Nick Scroggie, of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which is involved in the ambitious project, said that the latest in HIE’s series of tenders gives professional artists the opportunity to put forward their ideas.

He revealed that the agency has already received interest locally and internationally for the £15,000 scheme.

“We have indicated that the artists may wish to create one piece or a series of waymarkers or rest spots designed to encourage public interest in the pathways,” he said.

“This is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to seeing how this work develops.”

The total budget for art projects at John O’Groats is £108,500, with £58,590 of European funding coming from LEADER and the remainder from HIE.

A Transform weekend held last year cost a total of £32,692, including £17,000 for the artwork which temporarily adorned the John O’Groat House Hotel.

Mr Scroggie said a number of projects, including community ones, are still to be put out to tender.
