FOOD FOR THOUGHT: By Howard Stone, Minister of Castletown and Community Free Church
With the clocks going back we are reminded that the nights are drawing in and, for the next few months, there will be more hours of darkness than of light. The darkness restricts what we can do. If it weren’t for electric light in our homes, we’d be even more limited in what we can accomplish. If you can’t see, you can’t act. We need light.
In the Bible, God tells us that we are all in the dark when it comes to spiritual things. We may have notions about God himself – what he is like and does – and about life and what lies beyond death, but we can’t be sure that our ideas are correct, especially when so many people have different beliefs. What we need is light!
Jesus described himself as the “light of the world”. Obviously, he wasn’t talking about physical light (that’s the sun!) but about light to see spiritual truths. He promised that whoever follows him will have the light of life, an insight into and understanding of the great issues of life.
Followers of Jesus can “see” spiritual truth. They know who God is and what he requires of us. They have a grasp of the meaning and purpose of life. They have an understanding of what the future holds and what happens to us after we die. These are some of the truths that Jesus reveals to his believing people.
