Jane Foster snapped up Thurso Camera Club’s photographer of the year award at the end of a busy programme of activities over the 2018/19 session.

The club holds six monthly competitions, with the themes this year being Technology; Toys; Fungi; Rocks; Life on the Beach; and Lucky Dip.

The winning photos from each theme are posted on the club’s Facebook page, allowing club members and the public see the standard that they are working to. The overall winner is declared as the club’s photographer of the year and the results were announced at the end of the recent AGM.

There was a close three-way battle for first place, with Jane taking the honours ahead of second-placed Gareth Watkins and Julie Catterall coming a close third.

Thurso hosted this year's Highland Challenge inter-club competition, held in Wick. The event was well supported by sponsors and was a great success.

Red-hot favourite’s Dingwall swept the boards again. Thurso will be looking to regroup and try again in March 2020 when the competition will be held in Nairn.

Prior to the winter season, the summer photo-shoots proved popular with members. They meet outdoors and decide where to go within the county.

Philip Prideaux gave an excellent landscape tuition session at Castletown harbour.

James Gunn gave a similar session at a football match in Castletown. The footballers were left wondering why the paparazzi had suddenly descended on them!

The fantastic facilities at St John’s Pool bird photography proved to be a hit.

The other shoots were at Halkirk Highland Games and Castle Sinclair Girnigoe Castle.

In September, as in 2017, the first meeting of the winter session was dedicated to introducing potential members to the club. It worked, as five new members joined.

Guest speakers covered a wide variety of topics. They were Lisa Poulsen, James Gunn, Alan Sinclair, Karen Munro, Ben MacGregor, Colin Campbell, Julian Smith and Gareth Watkins.

Evening sessions included an outdoor photo-shoot at Wick harbour, a still life table-top shoot, the Christmas buffet evening, a photo critique session for potential Highland Challenge submissions and a portrait tutorial with Thurso Camera Club’s Billy Husband and North Highland College hair and beauty models.

The club has 24 members on its books at the moment.

Meetings are held in Thurso High School on the first and third Mondays of the month between September and April inclusive (7pm for a 7.30pm start).
