Local MP Jamie Stone is urging veterans struggling with the cost of living to take advantage of new grants worth up to £200 a month.

The Royal British Legion initiative can provide as much as £2400 a year for members of the armed forces community and is designed to help those who are finding it hard to pay bills or buy essentials.

The scheme is open to serving and ex-serving personnel as well as families, dependants and carers, including current and former spouses, partners and widows or widowers.

Mr Stone, the Liberal Democrat MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, said: “The cost-of-living crisis is making life tough for people everywhere and many of those struggling are members of the armed forces community.

“It’s really important that everyone finding it difficult makes the most of all support available, so I would encourage anyone in need to apply to the Royal British Legion for help.

“Help is also available for people who are not necessarily linked to the armed forces. I and my team are here to help all constituents. Anyone who is struggling should contact me for help accessing support.”

The grants provide up to £2400 annually in £200 monthly instalments. Successful applicants receive:

  • Vouchers to top up gas or electricity prepayment meters.
  • A virtual credit card you can use to pay utility bills (cards are restricted to this use)
  • Vouchers for food, clothing or household items
  • Replacement white goods

Those who don’t receive state benefits may also be eligible, as the Legion will measure income and expenditure to assess needs.

The Legion is encouraging anyone who is struggling with increasing costs to apply.

Any member of the armed forces community wishing to access the grants can find out more and apply at rbl.org.uk/costofliving or call 0808 802 8080.
