IT was the biggest event of its kind staged in the UK this year and now it has also raised a record-breaking amount of money too!
Over 700 participants took part in Caithness Race for Life in August and raised over £169,000 for Cancer Research UK.
It was the second time the event had been held at the Dammies in Thurso and it smashed the amazing £114,000 raised in 2008.
Over 70 teams took part – that’s almost twice the number of participants involved in any other Relay for Life event this year.
This comes despite the event having to be called off at 2am due to heavy rain and hurricane-force winds.
One of the organisers, Theresa Mackay, handed over the cheque to Cancer Research UK manager Louise Robertson at a special presentation at the town’s Weigh Inn Hotel.
She said the final total surpassed everyone’s expectations.
"At the end of the event we had already raised £125,000 and we knew that there was more money coming in. We never expected to collect almost £45,000 more and it was emotional moment for everyone involved at the official presentation."
