A beautifully hand-painted sign has been installed by the roadside at Staxigoe to help tourists find their way to Castle Sinclair Girnigoe.

It was created for Sinclair’s Bay Community Council by public-spirited Wick man Alex Paterson. Mr Paterson has been a signwriter for more than 60 years and is well known for his skills as a heraldic craftsman.

Community council member Pat Ramsay said: “This was initiated by Sinclair’s Bay Community Council and we were privileged to have the expertise of Alex Paterson to artistically produce our sign.

“Alex donated his time to our community and we appreciate this very much. Richard Mackay kindly erected the sign and it’s looking great.”

Sinclair Girnigoe, a few miles from Staxigoe off the Noss Head road, is popular with visitors and the North Coast 500 website describes it as “the most spectacular ruin in the north of Scotland”.

Parts of it are thought to have been built in the 1470s, with additions through the early 17th century. It was once thought to have been two separate castles but subsequent research indicated otherwise.
