A Caithness company says, with the nesting season underway, it can guarantee you sightings of puffins along the county’s coastline.

Seawolf Wildlife Tours (SWT) takes people on expeditions which start at Thurso harbour and along the nearby cliffs to find puffin colonies.

“Adorable puffins are guaranteed on this tour of some of our busiest local puffin roosts with an experienced ecologist. Whether you have your own transportation or not, we will get you that sighting,” says the website.

Jessica Finan, who runs SWT, says that the puffin tours are the most popular excursions and are run all day.

“But we also provide ‘simmer dim’ tours of nocturnal wildlife, private wildlife tours and sunset tours. We focus a little less on whale watching as they can't be guaranteed. However, we generally get whales or dolphins about once a week including humpbacks, minke whales, dolphins and of course the ever-loved orca.”

The public will be able to see the puffins take off and climb into their burrows to nestle and feed their young during the current nesting season. Other seabirds, such as common and black guillemots, fulmar, razorbills and cormorants, can be seen using high-powered binoculars.

There are easy routes for young children or tougher trails that get you up close for hardier hikers. Good walking boots are essential, and bookings are subject to cancellation during bad weather, which can cause dangerous conditions. Binoculars and ID guides are provided.
