INVESTIGATIONS were undertaken to find out why Dounreay suffered a recent power failure. Managing director, Mark Rouse, mentioned the problem during his regular report at the latest virtual meeting of the Dounreay Stakeholders Group.

He said work was carried out with Scottish and Southern Electricity to establish the cause of the failure. But he stressed that back-up systems "kicked in " and power was restored.

Mr Rouse said it is important for staff and the public to know what happened and address the issue.

Two years ago the plant suffered a power cut as a result of a lightning strike. The problem lasted for about an hour and was not a direct strike on the plant.

It caused "no risk to people or the environment," according to a Dounreay spokeswoman.

Other parts of Caithness were also affected by the bad weather which occurred in June , 2019.
